Buyers outweigh listings

With demand heavily outweighing supply, Australia’s home sellers hold the upper hand in the current market, new research shows.

Corelogic Head of Residential Research Eliza Owen wrote this week that dwelling sales continue to surge across Australia in spite of low listings levels. In the three months to July, there were around 171,100 sales, which is 53.4 per cent higher than what has typically been seen this time of year for the previous five years.

In the same period, there were just 121,200 newly-advertised properties for sale.

Lending still at historic highs

Investors continue to take advantage of low interest rates, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The figures show that the value of new housing loans were down by 1.6 per cent in June 2021 (seasonally adjusted) but remain at an historically elevated level of $32.1 billion.

New home sales solid in July

Demand for new houses remains solid, according to a regular survey of Australia’s home builders.

The latest HIA New Home Sales report shows that new home sales fell by 20.5 per cent in July, with declines reported in most states. But with lockdowns temporarily restricting activity and a full pipeline of work, builders remain optimistic.

$2m room divider

Most of us like to display artwork or family photos on our walls, but for Argentine race car driver Pablo Pérez Companc, nothing less than his favourite car would do.

We don’t mean a photo of it, either: he decided to use his $2million Pagani Zonda R as a room divider. Actually it’s a full-size copy of the car, but flipped on its side and mounted on a stand, it certainly makes an impression in his Miami beachfront apartment.
