Apartments down but houses strong

Apartment building continues to fluctuate, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The latest figures show that the total number of dwellings commenced in Australia fell 1.1 per cent to 40,293 in the June quarter, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Work started on new multi-unit homes drove the fall, dropping 7.4 per cent to 13,756, following a rise of 1.4 per cent in the March quarter.

House starts, on the other hand, rose 1.7 per cent to 25,732 following a rise of 5.7 per cent in the previous quarter.

There were 221,533 total sector dwellings under construction in the June quarter, of which 88,235 were new houses.

In seasonally adjusted terms, 44,853 homes were completed in the June quarter.

New houses accounted for 28,228 of those homes, rising 11.4 per cent from March to be up 3.5 per cent since June 2023. In the same period, new multi-unit completions rose 0.4 per cent to 15,691.

The value of new residential building fell 0.4 per cent in the June quarter to $17.1b, following an increase of 0.6 per cent in the March quarter, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Work done on alterations and additions to residential buildings rose 0.6 per cent to $2.8 billion.
