The sheer volumes of wind and water currently inundating South East Queensland and northern NSW this week are leaving homes in conditions ranging from unliveable to just a bit damp.
What is to be done, if your home is damaged by storms or floodwaters? We look at some expert advice on the immediate and subsequent steps to take on the road to recovery.
According to NSW State Emergency Service (SES) the most important thing is, do not return to your property until you have been given clearance by local emergency services. There may well be risks on the way to your house, or inside, that you need to be aware of.
Once you have access to your home, the SES’ advice is to:
- make sure people and pets are kept away from any damaged areas;
- contact a qualified person for a structural assessment;
- consider staying with friends or relatives until the assessment is complete;
- ensure the mains power is off, if appliances, power points or circuits have been exposed to flood water;
- before entering your home, be aware that native wildlife, including snakes and spiders, might have taken refuge there;
- call an electrician and a plumber before using any power or water. Using damaged wires and pipes is not only extremely dangerous but could exacerbate any problems;
- before touching or moving anything, take photos – walls, floors, furnishings, inside cupboards and drawers (if possible), and including the yard, surrounding areas and neighbourhood, for insurance;
- keep all receipts, to help with that claim;
- once you have spoken with your insurance provider, you can start removing rubbish and debris. Sanitise or dispose of personal items, and bin all food, including tins, that came into contact with floodwater.
- always wear protective clothing, including boots and gloves, when cleaning up.
Most importantly, remember you are not in this alone. You’ll find that others in your community want to help, especially if they were not immediately impacted, so be prepared to accept any assistance.
