'Unexpected red': do we need it?

In 2024, Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon announced her ‘unexpected red’ theory in a TikTok video, and as happens with TikTok, the video received millions of views and the theory became ‘a rule’.

Basically, according to Migliazzo Simon, the theory is that if you add ‘anything that’s red, big or small, to a room where it doesn’t match at all, it automatically looks better’. Whether or not you like to adhere to design rules, there is no doubt that a pop of colour – a cushion, lamp or even just door knobs – will add interest to a room.
